The 10-Minute Relight: How to Get Moving on Your Worst Morning

You do not need to feel motivated to start. You need a version of the task small enough to do anyway.

Some mornings the fire feels completely out. This is not the guide for building a five-year vision. It is the guide for the next ten minutes.

Step 1: Stop trying to feel ready (1 minute)

Waiting to feel motivated before you act is backwards. Action creates motivation almost as often as motivation creates action. Your job right now is not to feel like doing the thing. It is to do a version of the thing so small that feeling like it is irrelevant.

Step 2: Name the one thing (2 minutes)

Pick the single task that, if you did it, would make today feel less heavy. Not your whole to-do list. One thing.

Step 3: Shrink it to two minutes (2 minutes)

Whatever it is, make a version that takes two minutes or less.

Step 4: Set a five-minute timer, not a finish line (1 minute)

Tell yourself you only have to work for five minutes and can stop after that. Most of the time, starting is the entire battle. Once you are moving, stopping feels worse than continuing.

Step 5: Do the two-minute version now (2 minutes)

Not after coffee. Not after you check your phone. Now, while the instructions are fresh.

What to do when this still feels impossible

If even the two-minute version feels like too much, shrink it again. "Open the file" becomes "find the file." There is always a smaller version. Going smaller is the strategy, not a consolation prize.

What good looks like

You did something, however small, before your brain finished arguing about it, and that is enough for today. Tomorrow you build on it with the next guide, Find Your One Thing.
